{"id":201,"date":"2021-02-06T21:22:44","date_gmt":"2021-02-06T21:22:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seanamoorhead.com\/?page_id=201"},"modified":"2021-02-06T21:33:59","modified_gmt":"2021-02-06T21:33:59","slug":"reading-list","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/seanamoorhead.com\/index.php\/reading-list\/","title":{"rendered":"Reading List"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There should be a word for what it feels like when you find that perfect new novel. \u00a0It&#8217;s a story that grabs your attention at the first page and when you reach the end (usually at 2 am because you have not been able to put it down), you want to read it all again.<\/p>\n<p>My criteria for a good fantasy story includes compelling and believable world building, complex characters (with extra points for quirkiness), well-plotted twists (that have been layered in the story and don&#8217;t feel forced but instead get you excited), strong writing style with a spice of beauty in it, and an ending that fits with the story. \u00a0Most essential, I want to be pulled into another world by creative and clever writing.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of my recent favourites that I have read (in no particular order):<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-168 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/seanamoorhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/35959740._SY475_-195x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"195\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seanamoorhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/35959740._SY475_-195x300.jpg 195w, https:\/\/seanamoorhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/35959740._SY475_.jpg 308w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 195px) 100vw, 195px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Circe by Madeline Miller<\/strong> &#8211; This is a combination between mythology, history and fantasy. \u00a0Brilliant and beautiful writing. \u00a0By her own word magic, the author weaves this tale of an unforgettable and complex character. \u00a0This book should become a classic. \u00a0Please, write more!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-186 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/seanamoorhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/27774758._SY475_-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seanamoorhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/27774758._SY475_-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/seanamoorhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/27774758._SY475_.jpg 317w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir<\/strong> \u00a0&#8211; I adored this book from the first paragraph. \u00a0When I read the first chapter, I had to read it again because I knew I was going to love this book so much and I wanted to savour every word.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-171 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/seanamoorhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/35887181-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seanamoorhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/35887181-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/seanamoorhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/35887181.jpg 317w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang<\/strong> &#8211; This is an incredible book and brilliant world building, using Chinese history as a backdrop. \u00a0The main character is compelling and although the book does go some very dark places, it never loses its narrative voice.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-169 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/seanamoorhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/x300-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seanamoorhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/x300-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/seanamoorhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vita Nostra by Marina &amp; Sergey Dyachenko<\/strong> &#8211; This is probably one the best written fantasy books I have read for a very long time. \u00a0The writing is almost like music, it is so beautifully crafted. \u00a0It blends magic and philosophy, adventure and terror in an extraordinary way. When I finished it, I was not sure if I understood it, but loved it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-181 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/seanamoorhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/23437156-198x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"198\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seanamoorhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/23437156-198x300.jpg 198w, https:\/\/seanamoorhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/23437156.jpg 314w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 198px) 100vw, 198px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo<\/strong> &#8211; I enjoy all of Leigh Bardugo&#8217;s books and this one is one of my favourites. \u00a0I like the twist of a fantasy heist and all the POVs keep it exciting. \u00a0This book should be made into a movie!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-174 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/seanamoorhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/19549841-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seanamoorhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/19549841-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/seanamoorhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/19549841.jpg 298w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Seraphina by Rachel Hartman<\/strong> &#8211; It has dragons in it! \u00a0Need I say more? \u00a0It also brilliant with a wonderful heroine who we can&#8217;t help but love.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-167 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/seanamoorhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/39662738-196x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"196\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seanamoorhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/39662738-196x300.jpg 196w, https:\/\/seanamoorhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/39662738.jpg 310w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 196px) 100vw, 196px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>An Illusion of Thieves by Cate Glass<\/strong> &#8211; I don&#8217;t know why I liked this book so much but I read it twice. The setting was unique, inspired by renaissance Italy and I enjoyed the character and world building. The author has written a second book which I enjoyed equally as much.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-166 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/seanamoorhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/35271523-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seanamoorhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/35271523-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/seanamoorhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/35271523.jpg 316w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Senlin Ascends by Josiah Bancroft<\/strong> &#8211; This is the first part of a series and I actually liked the second book (Arm of the Sphinx) even more than the first &#8211; an incredible feat. The writing is excellent and the character building superb. The humour in the story made me laugh out loud at times. \u00a0This is one series that gets better with each book. \u00a0I&#8217;m looking forward to the fourth novel.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-182 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/seanamoorhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/29008738._SY475_-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seanamoorhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/29008738._SY475_-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/seanamoorhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/29008738._SY475_.jpg 317w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Bird and the Sword by Amy Harmon<\/strong> &#8211; There is something beautiful about this book. \u00a0It feels like a fairy tale that we should all know.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-183 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/seanamoorhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/16239655-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seanamoorhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/16239655-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/seanamoorhead.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/16239655.jpg 315w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Moth and Spark by Anne Leonard<\/strong> &#8211; A splendid stand alone book, rare in fantasy genre. \u00a0It has dragons, love and adventure. \u00a0There&#8217;s more romance than typical in fantasy (it is more like a fantasy- romance combination &#8211; also rare).
